Chemical Peel Pre/Post Instructions & Consent

Before your treatment:

  • Please remove make-up and skin care products prior to your treatment.
  • If you wear contacts and choose to remove them prior to your treatment, please bring your own supplies to do so.
  • Avoid any irritants to your skin, such as products containing Retin-A, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents, and scrubs for 5-7 days prior to your treatment.Do not wax or use a depilatory on treatment areas one week prior to your treatment.
  • Avoid tanning or tanning beds for approximately 1 week prior to treatment. If you are in the sun, we recommend sun protection of SPF 30 or higher. Sunburned skin cannot be treated.

After your treatment:

  • Erythema and swelling are common side effects. A red or pink hue can persist like a moderate sunburn. Swelling may be more noticeable on the second day.
  • Peeling of the skin may or may not happen. It is important that you do not pick or pull at any skin that is flaking or peeling.
  • Peeling can last 3-7 days and the severity of the peeling will depend on your skin condition.
  • Mineral make-up can be applied the following day.
  • After 5-7 days, patients can return to regular skin care products, or as soon as it is comfortable to do so.
  • Avoid alcohol based toners for 10-14 days.
  • Avoid tanning or tanning beds for approximately one week after treatment. If you are in the sun, we recommend sun protection of SPF 30 or higher.

Additional Post Care Instructions:

  • After chemical peel do not pick or cleanse your skin. Continue to apply your hydrating moisturizer or post care product recommended by your esthetician.
  • Day after the chemical peel, Gently cleanse your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser.
  • If your skin peels, please do not pick or pull your skin at any time, as it can cause scarring. Your skin will take about 4 to 7 days to completely recover depending on the strength of the peel or treatment you received.
  • Please do not exfoliate using a cleansing brush or any facial scrub or acid based products for 1 week or when the peeling stops.
  • Do not use any products that contain AHA, Glycolic, Retin-A, or any acne medication until your skin has finished peeling (usually 7 days, but possibly longer).
  • Keep skin well hydrated by drinking at least three 8-ounce glasses of water per day, and moisturizing throughout the day with a good moisturizer, both day and night. Reapply throughout the day as often as needed. Your skin should never be so dry that it is cracking or sore.
  • Refrain from waxing, tanning, or using sunbeds for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid working out and sweating for at least 24 hours and up to 48 hours.
  • If your skin becomes itchy at any time, you may use a 1% hydrocortisone cream (any brand).
  • Finally, use SPF 30 or higher consistently throughout the day. REAPPLY, REAPPLY, REAPPLY, for this will limit your skin from burning in the sun (even when it’s cloudy out or when sitting by a window) and will minimize the chances of more sun damage.

Chemical Peel/Microdermabrasion Consent

Chemical peel/microdermabrasion treatments are intended to attempt to improve facial expression lines, texture, scarring, and pigmentation.

Risks, side effects, and complications are usually minimal.  Occasionally you may experience erythema, swelling, bleeding, temporary scarring, dryness and/or discomfort. It may be necessary to pre-treat you with a specific medication if you have a history of frequent cold sores. The risk of bruising or bleeding may be increased by medications with anticoagulant effects such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, Celebrex), high doses of Vit. E, and certain herbs (Ginko Biloba, St John’s Wart). Treatment should be avoided by those with known keloid formation or if taking immunosuppressive therapy or diabetics. There may be an increased risk of post treatment infection and/or complications. Treatment should not be performed on skin with active cold sores, warts, skin with open wounds, sunburn, excessively sensitive skin, dermatitis, inflammatory Rosacea in the area to be treated, or an autoimmune disease.

Peeling of the skin may or may not happen. It is important that you do not pick or pull at any skin that is flaking or peeling.  Peeling can last 3-7 days and the severity of the peeling will depend on your skin condition. Lack of flaking or peeling is not an indication that the treatment was unsuccessful. If you do not notice actual peeling, you are still receiving all of the benefits of your treatment such as – improvement of skin tone and texture, the appearance of fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. There are a number of reasons why some people may not experience peeling such as – severe sun damage, having peels regularly with short intervals between treatments, and frequent use of Retin-A, Retinol, or AHA’s.

I have read and understand the risk of the treatment, the expected benefits, and alternative options, including no treatment at all. I have been given the opportunity to ask questions about my condition and the treatment and alternative forms of treatment. I understand that every effort will be made to provide a positive outcome, but there are no guarantees of results. I understand and accept the risks of the procedure, and request that it be performed on me. I hereby release the medical director, esthetician, and facility from liability associated with this procedure. I consent to this procedure today and for all subsequent treatments.
